 ClearCables.  The difference is clear...

The selection of ClearCables interconnect cable materials

The raw cable and connectors chosen to make each interconnect are carefully chosen based on the design intent of the product.  A necessity when choosing our materials is to insure the electrical specifications of the application are met.  For example, the proper design specification of a perfect RCA plug is that it must have an impedance of 75 ohms.  Many inferior designs sold by others  have impedance characteristics or roughly 25 ohms.  These plugs, even when mated with quality cable, can exhibit poor performance, and degrade video signals and Digital Audio data bit streams.  We chose Canare brand cables and connectors because they are true 75 ohm connectors, and their construction quality is superb.  We use Canare stripping and crimp tools which are designed to perfectly terminate the Canare products.

RCA Connectors:  Our Canare RCA connectors are top quality impedance matched 75 ohm nickel plated brass, with phosphor bronze gold and beryllium copper gold plated contacts, PPO Noryl dielectric material, and they have a usable bandwidth to 200 MHz. Other brands emphasize looks over function.  Take a close look at the RCA connectors on the mass produced brands:  You will often see a plastic cylinder, gold plated "death grip" end barrels, and a rubber gasket to prevent over tightening of the plastic barrel onto the connector.  These cheaper plastic materials are used to save the manufacturer money.  Some of our customers have reported breaking the RCA jacks on their equipment using these name brand cables because the RCA's have such a "kung-fu death grip".  On the higher end lines of mass produced brands, you will have an all metal barrel construction, which is more durable, however, despite the luxurious look and feel of these connectors, they do not always have the proper electrical specifications:  75 Ohm impedance and low contact resistance.  We use two Canare RCA connectors:  Model RCAP C-77 on our coaxial terminations, and the Model F-09 solder type connector on our balanced interconnect cables, which require soldering.

BNC Connectors:  Our Canare crimp type BNC Connectors are true 75 Ohm BNC's, with a recessed dielectric ring.  Most BNC's sold by other vendors are actually a 50 Ohm BNC, which can degrade your video performance.  Just like our crimp style RCA connectors, these BNC's crimp around the entire circumference of the coaxial cable shield.  These premium connectors result in no signal reflections for long cable runs and excellent system performance.

Digital Coaxial and Video Cables:  We use Canare's very best thick yet flexible shielded precision 75 ohm coaxial cables when building a digital interconnect or video cable:  Canare Coax Model LV-77S.  When we researched mass produced brands, we found that they often cut off the majority of the shield just prior to the soldering termination to make the soldering job easier, to the detriment of the cables electrical performance.  The best possible connection that can be made with a coaxial cable is a crimp connection, because it eliminates soldering and ensures perfect electrical performance.  Furthermore, it allows 100% use of the shield right up to the metal RCA or BNC barrel.  Many other vendors who use Canare products choose the model LV-61S coaxial cable, which is a fine product, but we chose Model LV-77S because it is thicker and has better signal isolation and return loss characteristics.  It also has a double shield - a 92% inner shield covered with a 95% outer shield.  This is a braided copper shield which is superior to the foil shield found on other brands of cable.

Analog Interconnect Cables:  We searched for the perfect analog interconnect cable, and none was better than the Canare Star Quad Model L-4E6S cable.  Star Quad refers to the 4-conductor style construction that minimizes the loop area between twists of the conductors.  According to Canare, this "double balanced" pairing reduces susceptibility to electromagnetically induced noise.

L-4E6S uses four 24 gauge annealed copper conductors, that when combined and soldered into the Canare F-09 RCA connectors, result in a pair of 21 Gauge balanced conductors.  We ground the 95% braided copper shield to the "transmitting" end of the cable, for superior noise rejection.  Other manufacturers mistakenly ground the shield to both connectors, resulting in two ground paths for the cable, and therefore a "ground loop" which causes noise.  Excellent frequency response is maintained due to the use of a special irradiated polyethylene insulation which provides a low capacitance dielectric.  These cables not only excel in the home audio environment, but are superior to all mobile audio cables currently available.  Each cable takes a full half-hour to build, due to the care and patience involved in stripping and soldering the wires to the RCA connectors, and that is why they are more costly than a crimped type coaxial cable.  We use six of these cables on the ClearCables A/V reference theater setup for the DVD-Audio to receiver connections, and their performance is stunning.

Speaker Wires:  With speaker wires, few parameters are more important than insuring you have a sufficient gauge cable for the amount of power you are supplying to your speakers.  Many companies use silver wires or silver coated copper, and claim "voodoo like" audio improvements due to the magic of silver.  These cables, of course, come with a hefty price tag.  The fact is that silver is a better conductor than copper, but this small difference in conductivity electrical property is easily offset by increasing the gauge (thickness) of the wire.  Many audiophiles believe that silver lends a "harshness" or "brash" quality to the sound.  We at ClearCables have listened to many brands of wire, and we believe the top quality thin strands of annealed copper that go into our speaker wires pass a true, uncolored, pure sound.  After listening to many available options in quality wire, we once again chose Canare to provide our cable.  Canare model 4S-11 is our flagship speaker wire.  Just like our analog interconnect cables, these speaker cables use a twisted four conductor "double balanced" Star Quad construction which reduces the possibility the wire will pick up electromagnetically induced noise.  These heavy gauge, low resistance cables allow you to maximize your quality amplifiers' high damping factor (the ability of your amplifier to control speaker excursion), resulting in tighter bass reproduction, smooth midrange, and crystal clear treble reproduction.  If you are used to "zipper construction" standard parallel speaker wiring , like the typical "leading brand" uses, you will be astonished when switching to our Star Quad cables.  The model number, 4S11, is a direct reference to the four 14 AWG (Gauge) "Star Quad" conductors that form, when combined, a pair of 11 gauge cables.  We terminate these speaker cables either single ended or in a bi-wire configuration.

WBT Brand Silver Solder:  WBT is the premier manufacturer of audiophile quality silver solder.  We use it whenever any soldering is done.  It has a 4% fine silver content, with halogen-free flux to allow full sonic potential and video quality.

TECHFLEX wire coverings:  We offer our cables either "naked", i.e. raw cable as Canare has manufactured it, in gray (4S-11 speaker wire and LV-77S Coax) or black (L-4E6S analog interconnects) or covered with TECHFLEX, a tough, good looking, and abrasion resistant mesh material, similar to the "braided hose" look found on race cars.  To order "naked" cables, simply give us a call before placing your internet order, or place comments in the box when you submit your order.  We are currently offering chrome and carbon TECHFLEX.  Chrome looks great with silver components, and carbon has a slight sheen to it, making it look perfect with both black and silver components, while being more conservative than the chrome.

3M heat shrink:  3M makes excellent quality heat shrink, and we offer it in colors to provide a color coding scheme for your connections.  Some manufacturers of custom built cables have heat shrink made with their name or logo on it, but this of course adds cost that must be passed on to the consumer.  We have chosen, at this point, to use plain heat shrink and pass the savings on to you.  We are confident you will tell your friends where you got them!

The assembly of ClearCables

The tools used:  Each interconnect is assembled by experts who use the proper tools.  Fine quality raw cable materials require special tooling to insure that stripping cable ends does not destroy wire strands, and Canare makes special tools for each of their cable products.  A proper crimp connection needs to be done with a precision die inserted into a tool designed just for the job.  ClearCables has purchases and uses this expensive tooling to insure that the job is done correctly and that the termination will last the life of the cable.  Many other manufacturers use an "all in one" cheap crimp tool that does a sub-standard job.

We also use a Wagner heat gun on our 3M heat shrink, and a hot knife on our TECHFLEX cuts.
